Satpurush in

America

Throughout the past year, we compiled and documented a collection of photographs, video clips, prasangs, letters, newspaper clippings, etc. to provide a more intimate and detailed glimpse into the history of BAPS and the Satpurush in North America over the past 50 years. Our journey started with the history of satsang in North America before Swamishri's arrival in 1974. We saw Yogiji Maharaj's enthusiasm and efforts to plant the seeds of the satsang mandal along with the first vicharan by Swaminarayan sadhus in 1970, and the struggles leading up to the first mandir.

As this progressed into 1974, Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s first calender day in North America occured on May 6th. From this day until November 11th, we followed along, experiencing his vicharan through the daily posts, reminiscing and understanding the hardships that came his way, the sukh he gave to the haribhakto, and the immense efforts he put into fulfilling Yogiji Maharaj's vision of satsang in North America over 14 vicharans and 1137 days. Interspersed throughout, we took a look at milestone events that brought the satsang mandal together and shaped the lives of haribhakto. These included sadguru sant vicharans, which were/are an integral part of the continued growth of satsang in North America. A mainstay throughout was coverage of the murti pratishthas that took place, showing the vast expanse of BAPS satsang centers across the continent. In the process of highlighting these, we began to see Mahant Swami Maharaj’s vicharans in America before and after Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s dhamgaman in 2016.

His inaugural visit in 2017 along with the inauguration of Akshardham in 2023, saw the continuation of Pramukh Swami Maharaj’s legacy of vicharan and satsang growth. Thereafter, we took a look at other regularly occuring activities that play a pivotal role in the spiritual growth of the youth, such as India Trips and National Shibirs. Finally, we ended off with a look at the making of Akshardham, which represents a culmination of the past 5 decades of BAPS Swaminarayan satsang in North America.

Today, as we sign off on this year long endeavor, we want to thank you for accompanying us on this smruti journey. We tried our best to present all of the information as accurately as possible. However, it is inevitable and a reality that some mistakes have slipped through, and that some things may have been left out. We offer our sincerest apologies in that regard and hope that you may, nonetheless, appreciate this documentation of the history of satsang, particularly of the Satpurush, in North America.
